(this letter was meant to appear in the September newsletter, however, my computer decided to take a vacation at the same time I did!)
Dear Friends,
This is the time of the year that
always goes by the fastest for me. The
frenzy of the packing up of bathing suits, buying school supplies and trying to
squeeze the last bit of summertime in before autumn. As I write this, I am watching the birds at
the window bird feeder at a friend’s house in rural Massachusetts on our way to
the Cape for a family vacation. Before
leaving, I prepared everything that we would need for school, even laying out
the kids’ outfits on their beds. The day
after we return home, school begins for some of my children. And while I have a fondness for the first
days back to school, this is the first time in a while that I can say that I
would like to stay in the season of summer a little longer. Unlike the past few years, THIS year we had an
uneventful summer: no major family
milestones, no big changes, no long trips, just ordinary summertime. I have felt relaxed, rested, refreshed, and
here’s the biggest thrill-reconnected with my children. Usually the four of them have very different
schedules, camps and friends but THEY decided early on in the season that they would rather
just stay home this summer. Sure, there
were days and days of chaos, bickering and boredom, but just as many days of
the older ones picking up the younger ones for a book or a trip to the park or
even help with potty training. I am ever
amazed at the power of just spending time together.
Transitions into a new routine after a period of rest can be challenging, but this fall, I look forward to new routines and new challenges. I marvel with wonder and awe at how children and adults alike can move into new territory with courage and grace.
Soon it will be time to come back from the beaches, home from the mountains, inside from the pool. I wonder what memories you all have made together this summer. I look forward to spending time with your children hearing about them in the first few weeks back to Sunday school. On Sunday, September 12th, there will be a Welcome Back Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall at 9am. This is an opportunity to enroll your child(ren) in classes, tour the classrooms, as well as meet the teachers. Please plan on attending that day for delicious eats and wonderful meets! The next Sunday, September 19th, will be the first day of classes at 9:15.
Welcome back!
